Meditation is the process of experiencing a state of pure awareness. Through calming the mind and emotions, you can experience a state of peace and tranquility. The average person has 60,000 thoughts a day. Of those thougths, almost 50,000 of those thoughts are not new. They're thougths the we had yesterday, last month, and last year. Through the practice of meditation, you can train yourself to de-identify with passing thoughts or mind chatter. Instead, learn to focus on pure awareness and just be the observer of your thoughts. Learn to let go of irrational or destructive thoughts or beliefs that cause fear, worry, doubt, and skepticism. Thoughts that are positive can be retained; those that are negative can be released.
Meditation allows you to spend time aware of yourself as the Self or observer of your thoughts.
